Ever wonder what second year garlic looks like? . Ever wonder what second year garlic looks like?
.
Last year, I ended up not harvesting about half of my Chesnok Red crop. Don’t ask - 2020 was weird all around, so we’ll just leave it at that 😂
.
The cloves in last year’s bulbs that were left underground over the winter each formed their own bulbs this year.
.
Tiny bulbs, smaller than my thumb (thumb partially visible in the photo, along with a couple of fingertips, for size comparison) with teeny tiny cloves.
.
The clump in the photo is a cluster of bulbs attached to each other because of their entangled roots. Each bulb did send up a scape this spring.
.
If you’ve never seen “wild garlic” before, this is exactly how it behaves. If I left them in the ground, they would just continue to bulb out, smaller and smaller, until only the hardiest cloves survived.
.
I have wild garlic growing in another bed from my original grocery store garlic experiment more than 15 years ago. Mother Nature always finds a way to survive.

Also got my first covid shot this morning, and am about to head out for my workout. Not too bad for the first day of spring.
